Volker Bertelmann
Also known as Hauschka (his artistic moniker), German pianist and composer Volker Bertelmann is widely acclaimed for his experimentations with the prepared piano. Bertelmann’s debut as Hauschka came in 2004 with the release of his Substantial album. His relentless work ethic has since spawned over a dozen full-length records and almost as many film scores.
A frequent collaborator, Hauschka paired up with renowned American violinist Hilary Hahn on an improvised album in 2012, Silfra, which was released by Deutsche Grammophon. In 2016, he collaborated with fellow Redbird Music artist Dustin O’Halloran on the score for Garth Davis’ Lion, which was nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for Best Original Score. Since then, he has gone on to score numerous film and TV projects, among which Baltasar Kormákur’s Adrift (2018), HBO mini-series Gunpowder (2018) and Showtime‘s Emmy-nominated TV series Patrick Melrose, which earned him a BAFTA Television Craft nomination for Original Music in 2019.
